San Lorenzo a Linari is located in the Sienese countryside,
in a prime location allowing you to reach some
of the most beautiful places in the world in a matter of minutes.
Two old towns of very distant origin, among the many historical sites of the region.
Following the streets running along the hills, you will easily reach the small medieval center of Monteriggioni and from there San Gimignano, known as “The City of Towers“.
Perfectly preserved, the town of Monteriggioni is a real medieval treasure.
Surrounded by fortified walls, it was a strategic outpost of the Republic of Siena having the task of defending the community from the continuous sieges and attacks of the Florentines, its historical rivals.
The ring of walls was essential to carry out this task, and his presence was so effective that Monteriggioni never fell into enemy hands.
The walls are equipped with several towers; a feature certainly very impressive at the time, so much that it was also mentioned by Dante Alighieri in one of the cantos of the Divine Comedy.
Today it is possible to walk the walls ring through some walkways: an unmissable opportunity to admire the surrounding landscape from a privileged position, following the steps of the ancient guards.
After a visit to Monteriggioni you can reach San Gimignano, another town with a historic charm.
Known as “The City of Towers“, nowadays 13 towers are left but in the period of its maximum shine there were up to 72 towers, matching the number of the noble families living there.
Coming from the countryside, the view of the medieval center is breathtaking: it is located on the top of a hill and a part of its walls is still visible today.
In addition to the wonderful buildings perfectly preserved, San Gimignano is a town plenty of hidden treasures.
From the Last Judgment frescoes on the walls of the Duomo, to the Torture Museum, passing through the Devil’s Tower, San Gimignano talks about the dark ages in a special way, playing with mystery and occult, through legends and historical events.
San Gimignano is a place to experience slowly, from walking through the public building of its square, where sacred and profane are a few meters away as the Cathedral and the Palazzo del Popolo, to the commercial heart of the town in Piazza della Cisterna, enriched by an octagonal well in its center.
A trip back in time, while enjoying every minute of the present.
